ROSSINI ICONOGRAPHY

Series directed by Cesare Scarton

The Rossini Iconography series was created with the intention of offering a visual, figurative contribution which completes and integrates the historical and musicological analysis present in the other series of the Rossini Foundation. It is a particularly valuable series, embellished by the choice of an extremely elegant editorial package.

Four volumes have been published to date. The first one, dedicated to the scenography of Guillaume Tell, offers a chronological excursus that goes from the debut of the opera in 1829 to the end of the nineteenth century; the second volume; Rossini on the Scene of the Nineteenth Century, presents the reproduction of all the sketches of the sets and the costumes of Rossini’s works preserved in Italian libraries, collections and archives; the third, dedicated to Otello, is one of the works that has enjoyed an undisputed fortune since its first appearance in 1816, analyses the Rossinian masterpiece in all its aspects, with references to the field of literature, figurative arts, of prose theatre; the fourth focuses on the greatest stage designer of the nineteenth century, Alessandro Sanquirico, who was rightly defined “the Rossini of theatrical scenic painting”. The volume constitutes the most important scientific contribution to our knowledge of the artist, reproducing and analysing all of his works in a single research path.
